| The Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 was the decisive naval battle of the Napoleonic Wars between 27 British ships under Admiral Nelson and 33 French and Spanish vessels under Admiral Villeneuve. Bonaparte needed to clear the British from the English Channel to allow an invasion of Britain. He planned to escape the British blockade, lure them away from Europe to the West Indies and then, after joining up with the Spanish, return to help his army cross the channel. On 21st October, Nelson sighted the combined French and Spanish fleets and gave the order "England expects that every man will do his duty." |
