The conquest of India game. Maharaja is a game for 3, 4 or 5 players. It broadly depicts the wars in, and migrations to, the subcontinent of India in the centuries from 1500 BC to 1850 AD, encompassing history's span from the Aryan invasions to the British conquest. Each player controls several nationalities. Nations gain victory points in various ways eg. by occupying specified areas on the map at specified times. Each nation has several playing pieces. They move on the board and can attack your opponent's pieces. Nations acquire additional pieces by population growth and reinforcements from their homelands. The first 11 turns each represent roughly 250 years, while the last five turns represent shorter periods. At the end of 16 turns, the player whose nations have accumulated the largest number of combined victory points wins the game.

The standard game takes up to 4 hours. There is an optional shorter three player game.
The four player game is recommended as providing the highest level of player interest, interaction and best overall game balance.
Maharaja is Avalon Hill's multi player game of 3000 plus years of Indian history beginning with the Aryan invasions from the north and ending with the unification under British rule. This is the sister game to the award winning Britannia game.
