1 x gold block playing board
1 x rules sheet
1 x metal facsimile Elizabethan sixpence
5 x gold sacks of gold playing pieces
5 x black sacks of gold playing pieces

Each player has 5 sacks of gold playing pieces. The game is played in 2 parts.

Stage 1;
Taking turns, each player places a piece on a Tudor rose of his choice anywhere on the board until all pieces are in place. At this stage, win the game by making a straight line of 3 pieces, unlikely with experienced players.

Stage 2
;
Taking turns, a player may move one piece to the next vacant rose in any direction along a track. If a straight line on 3 roses is made, remove any ONE of your opponent's pieces. Have 2 remaining pieces or be unable to move, to lose.

In competition, no player should delay for more than 1 minute before making a move. A result should be on the best of 5 games.
Merelles was a very popular game in Tudor times (1485-1603) and has its origins in 9 men's Morris and the glories of ancient Egypt.

In some ways this a more complex version noughts & crosses; with 16 possible places to go, rather than 9 and with moves off the board.
