Known as Pontoon, Blackjack or 21, it is a round game ( ie. for any number of players) where players try to collect cards with total face values nearest to 21 against the banker.

Pontoon is probably based on the French game Vingt et un, said to have been a favourite game of Napoleon Bonaparte during his exile on St. Helena. A popular family game in the UK played for matchsticks. The most popular card game of English speaking armed forces during WW2. Players take turns to be banker.

Blackjack casino play is between the casino’s banker and up to 7 players with 1 or more packs of cards. The dealer shuffles and cuts then burns the top card by showing it and putting it face up at the bottom as with all other cards returned. When the dealer reaches the face up cards, the pack is shuffled.
Make an initial stake up to the limit, the next card is dealt face down. Each player makes an initial stake of one or more notes up to the limit. The banker then deals a card face down to each player and a 2nd card face up. The dealer addresses each player in turn.

A natural (21 with 2 cards) to a player is shown by facing the down card. Further cards are dealt as requested. Over 21 busts.
After all players have played the dealer’s down card is turned over;
- <16, get subsequent cards till stick at 21 or less, or bust. Ace 1 or 11.
Players are paid as;
- a natural, player receives +150% of stake unless dealer equals
- equal score is standoff, stake returned
- dealer has higher score, stake lost
- dealer has lower score, player receives +100% of stake
Players have other options. Split pairs and play as 2 hands with an equal stake on the 2nd hand. Subsequent pairs may also be split. Double down , ie. double stake for a count of 9, 10 or 11 and receive only 1 more card.

Even though the Blackjack rules have been modified to beat a famous winning system devised by an American mathematician, it still remains one of the very few gambling games in which skill can overcome the luck of the deal.
