The game may be played as standard Risk or theme adapted.

Standard Risk; conquer all territories in Middle Earth. The Lord of the Rings adventure cards, Leaders and the Ring are not used.
Lord of the Rings Risk; Play for good or evil and score points before the Ring leaves Middle Earth. Occupy territory, control regions and hold strongholds. Visit ancient sites of power scattered around Middle Earth with your Leaders and complete missions for rewards. Mountains and rivers create impassable regions, while sea ports allow greater movement of battalions.
When the Ring leaves Middle Earth, the player with most points wins.
