This is a well presented compact wooden box containing traditional shipboard games of skill and excitement. The box includes rules for the games of; crown and anchor, batten down the hatches, going to Boston, scuttlebutt, yacht and crew.

Dice games are probably the oldest shipboard pastime and certainly the sailor's favourite, as he could carry them in his pocket, ready for a game at any opportunity. Dice were frequently used to settle disputes or to cast lots to decide who would carry out unpopular jobs. Originally cut from pieces of bone or ivory, they were known as bones and rattling the bones was the sailor's term for a game of dice. Because they were hand made, they were also frequently loaded, intentionally or not. Even when it became possible to make dice accurately with moulding machines the name bones stuck.

There are six favourite games in this box which come from nautical tradition or which have been more recently adopted. Batten down the hatches is basically the same as the more commonly known Shut the box. Crown and anchor is a unique game using special dice. Going to Boston is a simple and fast, gambling game. Yacht using the spot dice is similar in style to the more commonly known Yahtzee. Crew is a unique game using the spot dice and the special score pad provided. The aim of this game is to collect a ship, a captain, a mate and as many crew as possible over 10 rounds. The sailor at the end with the most crew becomes Admiral of the Fleet. Scuttlebutt is the naval term for gossip. The scuttlebutt aboard ship was an open scuttled fresh water cask (butt) between decks, from which issues were made to the mess decks and men gathered for refreshment. The spreading of hearsay that went on there gave rise to the word. Scuttlebutt is an entertaining game using poker dice, where the passing of information which may or may not be true; scheming, bluff, misinforming and skulduggery, are vital tactics. The landlubber's version of this game is known as liar dice. The red option dice can be used to add to Going to Boston , Batten down the Hatches and other games.

A great collector's item.
