The site of a vital bridge over the Rhine and the object of a massive ground and airborne operation to outflank the German Westwall defences. - Hurtgen forest, Approach to the Roer, November 1944. On the German / Belgian border, the US. army's first major thrust into Germany ground to a halt amidst dense pines and deep ravines. - Remagen, Bridgehead on the Rhine, March 1945. Captured with its railway bridge over the Rhine still intact. American tanks rushed across to form a bridgehead into Germany to await counter attacks. - Bastogne, The desperate defense, December 1944. Bypassed and surrounded by Panzer divisions as they raced for the Meuse river, Bastogne had to be captured to ensure ultimate success. |
