A game of contemporary naval warfare in the Caribbean Sea, North Pacific and East Atlantic oceans.
3rd Fleet is actually 3 games in 1, for each ocean. Players control surface ships, submarines and aircraft. Each unit is carefully evaluated in 10 different areas of modern naval combat.
Players must protect their forces from weapons such as smart bombs, surface-to-surface missiles and torpedoes whilst trying to damage the enemy.

Playing time is 1 to 4 hours for introductory scenarios but may take 9 hours or more for advanced scenarios. The game is complex and suitable for solitaire play.

Special game features;
- US navy is allied to navies from UK , Canada , France , Netherlands , Spain , Portugal , Belgium , West Germany , Denmark , Norway and Sweden .
- Soviet navy is allied to navies from Cuba , Poland and East Germany .
- Latin American navies are Columbia , Venezuela , Argentina and Brazil .
- Combat Systems; torpedo, cruise missile, surface-to-surface missile, anti-submarine warfare, bombing, air-to-air and close combat.
- Other; off-map airfields, US Air force stealth fighters, torpedo decoys, new soviet Tbilisi class aircraft carrier, long range SAMs, US coastguard cutters, KC- 135 and KA-6 air refuelling tankers, new US seawolf class submarines, sea-skimmer and fast SSMs, minesweepers and US navy RH-53 minesweeping choppers, in-port and at-sea replenishment, docking, darkness and weather, commando raids, satellite detection, high air mission profile, co-ordinated air strikes and US stand-off ASW attacks.
